In 2019, Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas with catastrophic force, leaving behind a trail of destruction that forever changed the islands. Dorian formed quickly, growing from a tropical storm to a Category 5 Hurricane in fewer than 10 days. By the time Dorian made landfall over the Abaco Island, it had amassed enough power to sustain winds in excess of 185 mph. To this day, it remains the most powerful storm to hit the Bahamian Islands.
Dorian left a scar that will never fully heal. I did not live through Hurricane Dorian, but I walked through the spaces it left behind. These images attempt to offer a glimpse into the island and its inhabitants, how they were forever changed, and how they are slowly restoring beauty to their beloved paradise. This project does not attempt to speak for those who did live through this terrible event, as the experience of living through Dorian is one I will never truly understand. Walk through the Great Abaco Island and witness how life and beauty have slowly returned after the rain has fallen.
